Science at the Library!

Science with kids can be very fun, and I am always looking for ways to bring science into the library, especially for kids. I have started a 4 week program this month called SciFri (Short for Science Friday), and each week we will do a different science experiment/activity. This past Friday was the first session where the kids molded volcanoes out of clay and then made them erupt! They LOVED watching the eruption and there were plenty of shouts to do it again and again. It’s a bit messy, but I say the messier the better when it comes to kids. They love to make a mess!

Here are come of the volcanoes, post-eruption:

The kids had a blast (pun intended)! The volcanic reaction was just baking powder and vinegar, so it’s easy for the parents to replicate the activity at home with their volcanoes, as long as they don’t mind a little bit of a mess. 🙂

Next up this week: Hovercrafts!

And The Winning Team Is…

SUPERMAN!

It was a close race, and each team had their moment at the top but in the end, Superman’s team has won the ice cream party for this year’s summer reading challenge! We will be contacting winners to tally how many will be in attendance for the party, which will take place on Wednesday, August 12th at 3:00 PM. If you can’t attend, don’t worry. We will have a coupon reserved for you that you can use to receive free ice cream at your convenience!

Teen prizes will be picked this week and winners will be contacted via telephone.

I want to thank you all for participating in this year’s summer reading program. I had a lot of fun planning it and doing lots of superhero themed programs with you all! I hope you had fun, and I hope you enjoyed the books you read! Even if you aren’t on the winning team, you are all still superheroes in my eyes. Great job, everyone! 🙂  IMG_3813
