February Program Descriptions!

Hello all!

Despite February being the shortest month it is chock full of fun activities at the library!  You can check out our full calendar here!  Please keep in mind that some of our programs do require prior registration; to register for a program or to get more info about a program you can drop by the library, call us at (203) 888-6944, or e-mail me at rrivero@oxfordlib.org.  I hope to see you all soon!

 

Chess Club – Mondays in February 5:30PM

  • Make new friends, learn the game, or test new strategies.  All ages and skill levels are welcome.  This is one of our fastest growing programs so we encourage registration for this event each week to aid with partner match ups, however, drop in guests are always welcome!
    • Recommended age groups: All ages welcome!

 

Creating Our February Bulletin Board – Monday 2/1  6:30PM

  • We will be making Valentine’s for the books we love! All of our book Valentine’s will be displayed on the bulletin board in the Children’s section of the library!
    • Recommended age groups: All ages welcome!

 

Groundhog Day Crafts and Story Time – Tuesday 2/2  10:00AM

  • We will be reading fun stories about Groundhog Day and making cute crafts! We will also vote on whether we think Spring will come early or if Winter is hanging around!
    • Recommended age groups: All ages!

 

Junior Friends of the Library Planning Meeting – Tuesday 2/2  4:15PM

  • The Junior Friends group plays an active role in planning programs, fundraisers, and making the library a better place! At the previous meeting we discussed hosting a Valentine Craft program. This meeting will be spent planning the when, what, and how of the program!
    • Registration for this program is required. Recommended Age Group: 8 – 18

 

Science Snoopers: Whoooose Awake?  – Wednesday 2/3  10:00AM

  • Come learn all about owls with special visitor, Ms. Jean! Science Snoopers brings science to life!  Each meeting consists of a lecture, enhanced with hands-on material, props, or experiments!  A short story, related to the theme, is read and an art project will be involved!
    • All ages welcome!

 

Teen Craft Night: Yarn Sculptures – Wednesday 2/3  4:15PM

  • We will be creating cool sculptures out of yarn that can be mounted on your wall or hung up.
    • Registration required. Recommended age groups: 13 – 18 

 

 

Infant and Toddler Play Group – Thursday 2/4  5:45PM and Thursday 2/25  6:00PM

  • A fun and relaxed atmosphere to bring your little one and play, read, and get to know other families in the area! We do recommend registering for this program to give a general idea of how many children we are expecting.
    • Recommended age groups: 6month – 3years

 

Take Your Child to the Library Day – Friday 2/5 

  • Saturday 2/6 is Take Your Child to the Library Day, we will be celebrating on Friday 2/5! Be sure to come by to check out materials, do a craft, or just say hi! Stay tuned to our website and calendar for a special announcement about the day!
    • Recommended age groups: All ages welcome!

 

 

Chinese New Year Pajama Party and Story Time – Monday 2/8  6:30PM

  • Jump in your PJ’s and come visit us to learn about Chinese New Year! We will be reading fun stories about the exciting celebrations and making crafts as well!
    • Prior registration is encouraged. Recommended age groups: 4-8

 

 

Musical Mornings – Tuesday 2/9 and Wednesday 2/24 at 10:00AM

  • Join us for a morning of music! We will be exploring instruments, dancing, sing alongs, finger plays, and more!  The program runs 30 minutes long and is fun for children of any age!
    • Recommended age groups: All ages welcome!

 

Mardi Gras Crafts and Story Time – Tuesday 2/9  4:15PM

  • We will be exploring the food, music, and festivities of Mardi Gras! We will be reading stories about music and the celebration as well as making fun crafts!
    • Prior registration is encouraged. Recommended age groups: All ages welcome!

Teen Homework Club – Wednesday 2/10  4:15PM

  • Everything is more fun with friends. Even homework! Come relax at the library to work on your homework and have some snacks.  We’ll be enjoying fun breaks throughout the evening such as yoga, a dance break, funny youtube videos, and more to refresh our brains and bodies and take on our homework!
    • Registration for this program is required. Recommended age group: 6thGrade – 12thGrade

 

National Inventor’s Day!  Invent and build a Rube Goldberg Machine! – Thursday 2/11  5:00PM

  • In honor of National Inventor’s Day we will be putting our creativity and problem solving skills to the test to try and build a Rube Goldberg machine.  A Rube Goldberg machine is a device that is designed to complete a very simple task in the most elaborate way possible.  We will be trying to simply hit an “Easy” button!
    • Prior registration for this program is required. Recommended age group 8-12

 

Valentine’s Day Pajama Party, Crafts, and Story Time – Thursday 2/11  6:30PM

  • We will be reading stories, making Valentines, and having snacks! Feel free to come in your PJs and join the fun!
    • Prior registration for this program is encouraged.  All ages welcome!

 

 

Valentine Creation Station – Friday 2/12  12:00PM – 4:00PM

  • Our craft table will be filled with everything you need to create Valentines for the special people in your life! Drop by any time between 12:00 and 4:00 to make a Valentine!
    •  All ages welcome!

 

Show and Tell Story Time – Tuesday 2/16 and 2/23  10:00am

  • Come join us for story time with a twist! We invite you to bring a favorite toy or special item from home to talk about with our friends! This program is walk-in welcome and fun for every age!

Tabletop Game Tuesday – Tuesday 2/16   3:00PM – 4:45PM

  • Bring your family and friends to enjoy a huge assortment of board games on Tuesday afternoon! Games will be set up at tables in the Children’s section to be played at your leisure and we encourage the whole family to come and enjoy some time together!

 

“Love Your Pet” Story Time and Crafts – Wednesday 2/17  10:00am

  • Friday 2/19 is National Love Your Pet Day! We will be having a fun story time all about our pets on Tuesday 2/17 to celebrate! Feel free to bring along a photo of your pet pal!
    • All ages welcome!

 

 

Collectors Club – Wednesday 2/17  4:15PM

  • Do you collect shells, cards, figurines, or anything else? Join us at the Collectors Club to show off your awesome collection and learn about other people’s as well!
    • Registration for this program is encouraged. Recommended age group: Grade 3 – Grade 6

 

Special Program Hosted by the Girl Scouts!  Thursday 2/18  3:45PM

  • One of our local Girl Scout Troops is working toward their Bronze Award! They will be hosting their own programs the third Thursday of each month from 3:45PM to 5:15PM.  Stop by to see what fun activities they have in store and to support them as they work toward their Bronze Award!
    • All ages welcome!

 

Pokemon Club – Thursday 2/18  4:15PM

  • Bring your cards, bring your friends!  Play against opponents and try to catch ’em all!
    • Registration for this program is required.All Ages!

 

National “Love Your Pet” Day – Friday 2/19  3:30PM – 4:30PM

  • National Love Your Pet Day” is a day to celebrate the pets in our lives whether they be furry, fluffy, scaly, or spiky! Pets rock!  And to celebrate in our own way we will be decorating Pet Rocks to keep for your very own!  We will also be reading some silly pet themed stories, it is sure to be a blast!
    • Registration for this program is encouraged to make sure we have Pet Rocks for everyone! All ages welcome

 

Music and Movement – Monday 2/22  6:30PM

  • We will be shaking our sillies out Monday evening! Join us as we dance and sing along to fun action and movement songs!
    • Registration for this program is encouraged! Recommended Age Range:  5-8

 

Lego Club – Tuesday 2/23  4:00PM – 4:45PM

  • Do you love Legos? We do!  In the Children’s Section we will have lots of Legos out and available to build with!  We will also have Lego magazines to look through for ideas!
    • Registration for this program is encouraged! All ages welcome!

 

Teen Night: Minute to Win It – Wednesday2/24 4:00PM – 4:30PM

  • Can you make a pyramid using 36 cups? Can you move a cookie from your forehead to your mouth without using your hands?  Can you balance six dice on a craft stick?  If you said yes to any or all of these questions, ask yourself this; can you do it in under 60 seconds?  Come to teen night at the library to find out!  We’ll be trying out all these different challenges and more while competing against others and the clock to win bragging rights and some cool prizes.
    • Registration for this program is required. Recommended age range:  13 – 18

 

Making a Comic Book – Thursday 2/25  5:00PM – 6:00PM

  • Ever wonder what goes into making a comic book? We will be working together to create our own!  As a team we will create story boards, designate writers, illustrators, and editors to bring it all together!  When we are done, Miss Robyn will bring the comic home to bind it and make copies for all of the members of our program!
    • Registration for this program is required. Recommended age range:  8 – 11

 

National “Tell a Fairy Tale” Day – Friday 2/26  4:00PM – 4:30PM

  • We will be having a special Story Time for “Tell a Fairy Tale” Day! Along with fun and fantastical stories we will also create magic wands, crowns, and swords!
    • Registration for this program is required. All ages welcome!

 

Late Night Leap Day Pajama Party – Monday 2/29  6:30PM

  • Jump in your PJ’s and come visit us to celebrate Leap Day! We will be learning just what Leap Year is and reading silly stories about frogs, crickets, and other lovely leapers!
    • Prior registration is encouraged. All ages welcome!
