January Program Descriptions

Happy New Year everyone!

I am so excited for this month’s programs!  There are details about each program below and you can check out our January Calendar here.   We will be starting a Winter Reading program which will run January 4 – March 18.  During this time you can come get a special bookmark to keep track of all your winter reading.  See Miss Robyn any Friday between 12pm and 5pm to receive a prize for every 3 chapter books, 5 easy readers, or 10 picture books read!

Also, Winter Reading Week is 1/11 – 1/15, we will be holding special programs for each age group to create a winter newsletter for all of our patrons!

Big Kid Story Time – Mondays in January 4:30PM

  • Join us for a get together with stories specially selected for grades K-3! A snack will be provided and we encourage you to bring your friends, your enthusiasm, and your imagination!
    • Registration for this program is required. Recommended age group: Grades K-3

 

Chess Club – Mondays in January 5:30PM

  • Make new friends, learn the game, or test new strategies.  All ages and skill levels are welcome.  This is one of our fastest growing programs so we encourage registration for this event each week to aid with partner match ups, however, drop in guests are always welcome!
    • Recommended age groups: All ages!

 

Barnyard Friends – Tuesday 1/5/16 10:00AM

  • Come learn about a variety of farm animals as well as food crops with special visitor, Ms. Jean! Science Snoopers brings science to life!  Each meeting consists of a lecture, enhanced with hands-on material, props, or experiments!  A short story, related to the theme, is read and an art project will be involved!
    • Registration for this program is required. All ages!

 

National Bird Day Craft!  – Tuesday 1/5/16 4:00PM

  • January 5th is National Bird Day! To celebrate and show our love for our feathered friends we will be making bird feeders!
    • Registration for this program is required. All ages!

 

Musical Mornings – Wednesdays in January 10:30AM

  • Join us for a morning of music! We will be exploring instruments, dancing, sing alongs, finger plays, and more!  The program runs 30 minutes long and is fun for       children of any age!
    • Recommended age group: Preschool – Kindergarten

 

Sherlock Holmes’ Birthday! Story Time – Wednesday 1/6/16 4:00PM

  • We will be celebrating at the library with a very special story time with picture books filled with “Guess Who’s” and “Who Dunnits!”
    • Registration for this program is required. All ages!

 

Storybook Bingo – Thursday 1/7/16  4:30PM

  • Come play Bingo on boards made with some of your favorite childhood characters!
    • Registration for this program is required. All ages!

Junior Friends of the Library Introductory Meeting – Thursday 1/7/16  5:45PM

  • The Junior Friends group plays an active role in planning programs, fundraisers, and making the library a better place! This first meeting will be just to talk about the kinds of things the group would like to do and do talk about the role of the Junior Friends! Pizza and snacks included!
    • Registration for this program is required. Recommended Age Group: 8 – 18

 

Fantasy Friday Dragon Themed Story Time – Friday 1/7/16  3:00PM

  • Come to a story time all about dragons and other fantastical creatures! All ages welcome!

 

Winter Reading Week 1/11 – 1/15

  • We will be creating a Winter Newsletter made by the kids and teens of the library! We need your help to fill the pages with fun games, pictures, poetry, and recommendations of games, books, movies, and music! Registration is required so sign up today!
    • Winter Wonderland Drawings: Create wintery scenes to put in our newsletter! Monday 1/11 4:30PM  (Ages 3 – 7)
    • Reviews and Contributions: Join us to write recommendations, add your own pictures, poetry, and more! Thursday 1/14  5:30PM (Ages 8-11)
    • Reviews and Contributions: Join us to write recommendations, add your own pictures, poetry, and more!  We will also be figuring out the layout and design during this program! Friday 1/15  2:30PM (Ages 12-18)

 

Show and Tell Story Time – Tuesday 1/12, 1/19, 1/26  10:00am

  • Come join us for story time with a twist! We invite you to bring a favorite toy or special item from home to talk about with our friends! This program is walk-in welcome and fun for every age!

 

Little Learners Activity Group – Tuesday 1/12 and 1/26 at 2:30PM

  • Bring your infants and toddlers to our “Little Learners” Activity Group!  This is a fun and casual program to play with toys and sensory items, sing along to classic songs and finger plays, and spend time with friends!  We will develop large and small motor skills, cognitive development, and communication skills!
    • Registration for this program is required. Recommended age group: Infants and Toddlers

 

Rubber Ducky’s Birthday! Sesame Street Party – Wednesday 1/13/16  3:30PM

  • We will be celebrating Rubber Ducky’s birthday with stories about all of our Sesame Street Pals! Snacks and a craft will follow!
    • Registration for this program is required. All Ages!

 

 

Winter Water – Thursday 1/14/16  4:30PM

  • Winter is never boring for water! See water in all its wonderful winter beauty: frost, ice, and snow.  This program will be led by our Science Snoopers expert Ms. Jean!
    • Registration for this program is required. Recommended age group: Preschool – 5 th Grade

 

Winnie the Pooh Day! – Tuesday 1/19/16  3:45PM

  • We will be celebrating national Winnie the Pooh Day with a fun Pooh Bear movie and snacks!
    • Registration for this program is required.

 

Collectors Club – Wednesday 1/20/16  4:15PM

  • Do you collect shells, cards, figurines, or anything else? Join us at the Collectors Club to show off your awesome collection and learn about other people’s as well!
    • Registration for this program is required. Recommended age group: Grade 3 – Grade 6

 

Pokemon Club – Thursday 1/21/16  4:15PM

  • Bring your cards, bring your friends!  Play against opponents and try to catch ’em all!
    • Registration for this program is required. All Ages!

 

Teen Homework Club – Thursday 1/21/16 and Thursday 1/28/16  6:30PM

  • Everything is more fun with friends. Even homework! Come relax at the library to work on your homework and have some snacks.  We’ll be enjoying fun breaks throughout the evening such as yoga, a dance break, funny youtube videos, and more to refresh our brains and bodies and take on our homework!
    • Registration for this program is requires. Recommended age group: 6th Grade – 12th Grade

 

Tall Tails – Friday 1/22/16  3:30PM

  • A fun filled look at animal tails and why they are important. This science program will be led by Ms. Jean and include fun props, crafts, and a story!
    • Registration for this program is required. Recommended age group: Preschool – 5th Grade

 

Lewis Carroll’s Birthday!  Alice in Wonderland Story Time – Wednesday 1/27/16  4:15PM

  • Come celebrate Lewis Carroll’s birthday with us as we share fun short stories about the whole Wonderland gang and enjoy some iced tea in our own “Mad Tea Party!”
    • Registration for this program is required. All Ages!

 

Library Scavenger Hunt – Thursday 1/28/16  4:30PM

  • How well do you know the library? Can you find a book about a whale?  A book on tape?  Hidden treasures?  Come join us for this fun scavenger hunt!
    • Registration for this program is required.  Recommended age group: Grade 3 – Grade 6

 

Sci-Friday!  Science Fiction Short Story Discussion – Friday 1/29/16  2:30PM

  • Do you love Science Fiction? So do I!  If you love the genre or just enjoy an interesting read come on over for our Sci Fri story discussion.  We will be chatting about two different Sci-Fri short stories.  If you would like to join just ask me (Miss Robyn) for a copy of the stories any time this month.
    • Registration for this program is required. Recommended age group: Grade 7 – Grade 12

Calendar Change

There has been a small change to our December Calendar.  On Friday December 18th at 3:45pm Santa and Mrs. Claus will be visiting and reading a story!  If you would like to join this program please give us a call at (203) 888-6944, e-mail Miss Robyn at rrivero@oxfordlib.org, or sign up in the binder at the library!
