June Program Descriptions!

Summer is almost here!  Ignore the rain and the fact that it’s about 50 degrees out, I promise Summer is coming!  Check out these amazing Summer Programs for June and make sure to sign up ASAP!

We’ll be having special programs all day on June 20th to celebrate the kick off to Summer Reading so be sure to check out those programs!

Our Summer Reading Challenge is ALL AGES this year (yes even babies, yes even adults) and you can sign up to join the challenge starting June 20th!

 

Program Descriptions: Kids and Teens

Book Roast – Thursday 6/1     6:00PM

  • Have you ever SUPER disliked a book, character, or author? Come share your rant about the why’s of your disdain!  Let it all out!  Your criticisms should be specific and, if possible, humorous!  Everyone loves to gush about books they love, but don’t you wish you had somewhere to go and rave about what you hated?!  Then sign on up for our book roast!

Preschool Story Time “Mirrors” – Friday 6/2     1:30PM

  • During this week’s STEAM Story Time, we’ll be taking a look at mirrors and reflections! We will explore reflections of physical things and also how reflections change how we see images!
    • Age Range: 3 – 5 years old

Evening Baby Time – Monday 6/5     5:00PM

  • Baby time is composed of a lot of fun songs, rhymes, and movement games to do any time with your baby! It’s also just a special time to work in a little one on one time during the busy day.
    • Age Range: Infants to 18 months

Story Time “Friendship!” – Tuesday 6/6   10:00AM

  • Since we love making new friends and playing with our friends at story time, we’ll have a program all about how much fun it is to be around your pals.
    • Age Range: 18months – 4 years old 

Music and Movement – Tuesday 6/6   1:00PM

  • Come get your wiggles out with a program full of singing, dancing, and musical instruments.
    • Age Range: All Ages Welcome! 

Morning Baby Time – Wednesday 6/7     9:30AM

  • Baby time is composed of a lot of fun songs, rhymes, and movement games to do any time with your baby! It’s also just a special time to work in a little one on one time during the busy day.
    • Age Range: Infants to 18 months

Story Time “Art!” – Wednesday 6/7   10:00AM

  • We will be exploring artists, creativity, art tools, and so much more!
    • Age Range: 18months – 4 years old

Lego Club – Thursday 6/8     4:30PM

  • We will be taking out the smaller Legos, Lego books, Lego magazines, Lego EVERYTHING. All materials will be out in the children’s section available for you to play and build with at your leisure.
    • Registration Required. All Ages (Note: smaller Legos will be out for older kids to enjoy)

Teen Trivia  – Thursday 6/8     6:30PM

  • Come test your trivia knowledge! Categories will include Reading, Art, History, Tech, TV and Movies, Sports, and more!
    • 7th – 12th Grade

K – 3 Help With Picking a Summer Reading Book – Monday 6/12    4:30PM – 5:30PM

  • The library staff is, of course, always available to help you find just the right book! But to kick off the summer the right way, Ms. Robyn will be setting aside time this week for children in each grade who would like to come get some help picking their books to read over the summer!  If you are a rather reluctant reader, in between reading levels, or just want to make sure you have a book picked before August, this is a perfect time for you to come in and get a little assistance J
    • Age Range: Grades K – 3rd
    • **Registration Strongly Encouraged** 

Story Time “Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes!” – Tuesday 6/13   10:00AM

  • Stories, songs, games, and crafts inspired by Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tale characters!
    • Age Range: 18months – 4 years old

  • Come hang out in your PJs for a fun and silly story time! If you’d like, you can bring a stuffed animal who will spend the night at the library!  On Tuesday, you can pick up your stuffed animal and see how their slumber party was!

Summer Reading Kick Off Party! Tuesday June 20th!  5 Different Programs!

  • 10am – 11am: “Build a Better World” Story Time!
    • Age Range: 18 months – 4 years old

  • 11:30am – 12:30pm LEGO Brick Challenge hosted by the Children’s Museum
    • Age Range: All Ages
    • **Registration Required** Limit of 30 attendees

 

  • 1pm – 2pm: “Good Idea!” A program about inventions, hosted by special visitor Jean Mai.
    • Age Range: Grades 6th – 12th

  • 2:30pm – 3:30pm: Three Little Pigs Engineering Challenge! Can your structures stand up to the Big Bad Wolf?
    • Age Range: Grades K – 3rd

  • 4pm – 5pm: “Amazing Mazes!” Build a Marble Maze and challenge others to try to complete yours!
    • Age Range: Grades 4th – 6th

  • Whether you play the video games or cards or enjoy the show and movies, come play against or just chat with other friends interested in Pokémon!

Building Bonanza – Thursday 6/22    3:00PM

  • We will be building all afternoon! Come use Legos, Paint Swatches, and play Giant Jenga!

Getting To Know You – Thursday 6/22    5:00PM

  • We have a tall order for teens this summer. We are asking that you create a promotional video or presentation for the library!  You will have all summer long, you will be able to work with others or alone!  We’ll go over more details at this “Getting to Know You” program!  See you then!

  • We will brainstorm ideas of how to build a better world starting right in our own neighborhood! You will also create artistic representations of your great ideas!

  • A story time about people and places all around the world!

Teen Book Club – Wednesday 6/28    11:30AM

  • Each month we will research and read a different book, we will also watch movies based on books and hold discussions about he comparisons!
    • Age Range: Grades 7th – 12th

 Famous Structures – Wednesday 6/28    2:00PM

  • Come learn about some of the planet’s most famous structures!

Books as a Base For Building – Thursday 6/29     3:00PM

  • We will look at inspiration for building a better world from some of our favorite books.

Paper Bridges – Thursday 6/29    5:30PM

  • Come solve an engineering challenge! Build a bridge out of paper and test how much it can hold!

Program Descriptions: Adults

Sign Up to Host an “Armchair Travel” 6/1 – 6/9

  • Sign up for our weekly installation of “Armchair Travelers.” You will host a 30-minute talk about somewhere you have traveled to!  Present photos, souvenirs, bring cultural snacks, or anything else you would like to do!  Please find the signup sheet to host, at the beginning of the signups for June.  The sign ups to attend other patron’s presentations are available further on in the sign up binder

Book Tasting – Monday 6/5     5:30PM

  • The best way to find a new book or series! A whole bunch of books will be available at different stations through the library.  Each “taster” will have 5 minutes to spend with the book and a review card to make notes of their thoughts about it.  At the end of the tasting you can check out the book you liked best!

Homeschool Round Table: Monday 6/5     6:30PM

  • We are asking any parent or caregiver who has provided or is considering homeschooling for their child to join us! Our goal is to get a large gathering of people together to share their ideas or tips or to ask advice from experienced families!  We will also be speaking about how the library can offer fun and helpful programs for your family!  This month we will be discussing different curriculums!

Board Games– Friday 6/9     11:00AM

  • Friday morning we will be taking out all of our board games for you to enjoy! Get some friends together or come solo and make new friends!

Begin Your “Good Deed Scavenger Hunt” – Monday 6/12

  • As part of the library’s Summer Reading Program for adults, we will be having a Good Deed Scavenger Hunt all summer! Every time you witness or perform a good deed for another person, animal, your community, the Earth (you get the idea) snap a picture!  Bring it to the library and receive a prize ticket to enter in our Summer Reading Prize Giveaway!

Trivia Night – Monday 6/12     5:30PM

  • Come test your knowledge of an array of different subjects! History, geography, music, books, and more!

Cookie Swap– Friday 6/16     11:00AM

  • Bake your specialty and come in to share and swap! When signing up please specify what you’ll be baking and if you have any food allergies or specifications!  We’ll be making 6 cookies per person J

**SPECIAL VISITOR!** Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame – Monday 6/19    6PM

  • Women have been involved in military conflicts from the beginning of time; some as warriors, some as spies and others who made the munitions or simply called for peace.  Connecticut women are among the finest and bravest who have stood for their cause – sometimes defying gender norms, and often without the recognition they deserved.  CWHF Inductees prove that women are just as tough as men and will inspire others to shatter gender barriers. Learn about a teenager who helped save Danbury during the Revolutionary War, how Harriet Beecher Stowe sowed the seeds of conflict leading to the Civil War, and how Margaret Bourke-White’s photography brought civilians face to face with the war front for the first time.
