Register for the Detective Pizza Party!

To celebrate the beginning of our mystery-themed summer reading program, children and teens are invited to the library’s giant Detective Pizza Party on June 27 at 4:30 p.m. Enjoy a slice of pizza from Oxford Pizza Palace and make a craft! Registration is required.

During the summer reading program, babies, children and teens who listen to stories or read this summer will earn exciting prizes! Sponsors include Rodriguez Family McDonald’s, Peachwave Frozen Yogurt, the New York Mets, the Boston Red Sox, SportsCenter of Connecticut, RollerMagic, Re’Treat Contempo Salon & Spa, Country Creamery, Image Aviation and Children’s Studio for the Performing Arts. Special prizes were also donated by Carol LaFerriere. Additional book prizes were donated by several local families, and they were collected by Girl Scout Troop 60148 as well!

Online registration for the summer reading program begins on June 20 and continues through the beginning of July. A link will be posted on June 20, so check back!

Read to a Dog!

During Canine Book Buddies, book lovers in preschool – sixth grade are invited to look at books with a dog certified by Therapy Dogs International! Participants can register for a fifteen-minute session with Duncan on Thursday, May 23 between 4 PM and 5 PM or Thursday, May 30 between 5 PM and 6 PM.

Duncan will return during the first two weeks of June as well so check back for additional chances to read with him!

A Prom Just for Kids!

Join us for our fifth annual Precious Prom featuring live music by Mr. Gym! Toddlers – seven-year-olds are invited to dance the morning away on Wednesday, April 17 at 10:30 a.m. Formal attire is encouraged. Call to register today!

Become an Artist!

The library is celebrating an Artistic April with events that encourage creativity and imagination!

On April 8 at 4:30 p.m., second graders – fifth graders are invited to listen to Magritte’s Marvelous Hat, a unique book with surrealist illustrations reminiscent of hidden-picture puzzles. After the story, children will make their own drawings inspired by the surrealist art movement! Registration is required.

On April 25 at 5 p.m., children of all ages can create Picasso Pictures during an introduction to cubism! Registration is required.

Join us for a Mysterious March!

Improve your mystery-solving skills with four detective-themed events for kids in grades 2-5! Registration is required for each of the following FREE events. To sign up, call the library at 203-888-6944.

On March 6 at 4:15 p.m., make paper Secret Decoder Badges and scytales, the ancient Greek version of a decoder! Then, pass secret messages back and forth with friends!

On March 11 at 4:15 p.m., solve Jigsaw Puzzle Mysteries by listening to short stories and then putting together related picture puzzles!

On March 20 at 4:15 p.m., use simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to become a Math Detective!

On March 25 at 4:15 p.m., discuss the novel Mr. and Mrs. Bunny — Detectives Extraordinaire! Can Mr. and Mrs. Bunny help Madeline find her missing parents? To find out, read the book ahead of time; then share what you thought with other kids! Copies of the novel are available to borrow from the library.

One thing that’s no mystery? When it comes to springtime fun, the library is the place to be!

Attention All Writers!

Winter Writing Club members are encouraged to bring in their completed books so that videos can be posted to our website by the end of the month. Videos will also be shown on a big screen at the library on February 28 at 5:15 p.m.  Show off your writing and illustrating skills and gain fans of your work!

Lovesick Dessert Contest!

Enter our Lovesick Valentine’s Day Dessert Contest on February 7 at 4:30 p.m! Show how this holiday makes you feel! Either make a treat that is “love”-ly or a treat that is edible but “sick!”

The winner of the best nut-free treat will receive a human-heart-shaped gelatin mold and Roald Dahl’s Revolting Recipes!

This contest is open to all ages. Contestants are also the judges so come ready to eat! Registration is required. Call the library for more information!

Become a Writer!

On January 24, the library’s 2nd annual Winter Writing Club will begin! Kindergartners – eighth graders will receive blank books in which they can write and illustrate their own stories. New authors who create a book by February 28 will have their stories recorded on video and posted to the library’s website. Registration is required and will continue through the first week of February.

To celebrate the start of Winter Writing Club, the library will offer a Skype chat with author Eric Berlin at Center School on January 24 at 4:30 p.m. Children in grades 3-5 are invited to learn what it’s like to be a real author at this exciting event! Mr. Berlin is the author of The Potato Chip Puzzles, as well as other children’s mystery novels about puzzle whiz kid Winston Breen. No registration is required. In case of snow, this event will occur at the library on January 31 at 4:30 p.m.

Start off 2013 on a Happy Note!

Join us for these cultural events in January!

Parlez-vous francais? The library will offer Muzzy French programs at 4:15 p.m. on January 16, January 23, and January 30. Children in preschool – fifth grade can enjoy cartoons that teach French through language immersion. The easy-to-comprehend cartoons feature a friendly monster named Muzzy. An activity that reinforces new vocabulary will close each event. Separate registration is required for each Muzzy French program.

The library will host Muzzy Spanish at 4:15 p.m. on January 11, January 18, and January 25. Children of all ages can learn Spanish by watching cartoons. No registration is required for Muzzy Spanish.

On January 28 at 4:30 p.m., the Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project will teach Korean folk tales to children of all ages. Registration is required.
